Nature designed our metabolism to balance our weight. Around thirty years ago a disturbing development began to be noticed. It was a new phenomenon which saw more and more people seek new different ways to prepare and eat their food. New products were introduced and health diets came into vogue. A diet that had changed little in centuries became unrecognizable.
As the trend continued, people began to suffer weight problems and diet cravings. We began to ask ourselves; when did America get so fat? Commercial diets were developed to meet the need. These were diets that emphasized solid carbohydrates and a reduction in calories. The weight problems did not diminish, and diet cravings became an everyday reality. This trend has continued right up till today when more than sixty percent of the population is overweight and obesity spreads at a rate we could never have imagined.
Clearly the dogma created by nutritionist around their diets and expertise is plain wrong. It has been so for the past thirty years. Diets have kept step with weight problems from the beginning and there is no doubt we were slimmer and healthier people before they were accepted by our society. Diets are linked to weight gain not weight loss.
We need to re-activate our metabolism and we can only do that if we get back to the foods our bodies were created to eat. Questions like; how to stop sugar cravings should not have to be asked. We need to eliminate diets and get our metabolism back to normal. But that is not as simple as it sounds.
For the last thirty or more years we have actively tampered with our metabolism. We have subjected it to food binges, followed by extreme diets and dangerous detox preparations. We have abused our body with irregular bouts of overeating followed by food deprivation till our system no longer knows how to respond. We must implement a weight loss with no diet. That means, eliminate diets as we know them.
The reason my book, My Own Plan was written, was that it happened to be my own obesity plan. It is a plan I discovered five years ago. To my amazement it proved not just to take off all my excess weight, it has kept it off for more than five years. There is no reason for me to believe I can’t keep it off for another twenty years.
Why and when did America get so fat? The numbers for obesity America 2008, are staggering. Sixty percent of people now have a weight problem. Where will this lead? The obesity in children rates, between 1985 and 1995, shows that the combined number of overweight and obese children, aged 7 to 15, doubled. That figure is likely to have tripled by today. If nothing is change, these figures can only get a lot worse.
American obesity in children is both tragic and unnecessary. It never had to happen, we can still fix it, but we need to eliminate diets.
Most overweight and obese people share some symptoms that were not widely known thirty years ago. For example: It is common for our body to signal hunger a short time after we eat a big meal. We crave the foods we know are bad for us. We cannot stop ourselves from binging; we get angry if anyone tells us to stop and even angrier if they give advice and meddle with our food. Sounds just like an addiction doesn’t it? That’s exactly what it is.
It is not a new form of addiction, but it is the most ignored. It has been on the move for thirty years and it grows at a frightening pace. We must avoid yet another decade of American obesity in children. We need to set an example. We have to cure ourselves and our family of this addiction. If we don’t, the addiction will be passed on to our grandchildren. We need to learn how to stop sugar craving and any other food cravings. It begins and ends in your own kitchen.
